“Superb, homemade Indian food” is the hallmark of this vast, 500-cover curry house, founded by Mumtaz Khan as a tiny Kashmiri shop in 1979 and now a Yorkshire institution with a branch in Leeds and national brands of ready meals and halal babyfood! – “there are a number of good Indian restaurants in Bradford but this is different”, and “the decor makes it suitable to entertain guests”. Top Menu Tip – look out for the ‘Mumtaz Differently’ dishes, playful takes on pasta, lasagne and doner kebabs.

“Whether it’s a quiet meal for two or a large family celebration, it’s always a treat” to eat at this Bradford institution, which has grown over 45 years from a tiny Kashmiri shop into a vast restaurant accommodating 500 guests. Founder Mumtaz Khan based his original menu on his mother’s recipes, and has entertained guests including the late Queen. He now has a branch in Leeds, a national brand of ready meals and a halal baby food brand with global sales.

One of the biggest restaurants in our guide, seating 500 guests – this Bradford institution started out 45 years ago as a tiny Kashmiri shop close to its present “very comfortable” premises. Well-known for its “high-quality food”, fans include retired footballer Steven Gerrard and politico George Galloway, and there’s now a spin-off in Leeds and a national brand of ready meals.

This 500-seat mega-restaurant is “still immensely popular with the Asian community”, having started out more than 40 years ago as a tiny Kashmiri shop on the same street it now dominates. It’s “maybe too big these days” to hit the highest culinary ratings, but remains a “great place for a family get-together”. There’s now a spin-off in Leeds and a national brand of ready meals. Mumtaz banned alcohol on the premises in 2019, ‘to uphold the memory of our late Mother’, founder Farzand Begum.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
