Harden's survey result
Summary
Occupying a 15th-century coaching inn with two proper bars and a dedicated restaurant, this “old favourite” has been run by the same family for over 75 years and is “still very good” by all accounts, having helped pioneer the gastroboozer movement back in the 1980s. “Great quality food” of a local and seasonal stripe (venison, lamb, and veggie Wellingtons) and a proper pub vibe make it a real “family favourite”.
Summary
“Still our favourite local after 30+ years..” – This “delightfully olde worlde” 15th-century coaching inn has been run by the same family since 1938, with landlords Christine & John Vereker these days helped by the third generation. It remains “a lovely, vibrant old venue that trailblazed the gastropub concept back in the ’80s and is still producing wonderful food in a genuine pub atmosphere”.
Summary
“One of the original gastropubs still going strong” – this long-established destination is “a family favourite” for its sizable fanclub: a fifteenth-century picturesquely located inn, which has been owned and run by John and Christine Vereker’s family for over 75 years. “The food is excellent and service is energetic and welcoming”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description
The two busy bars have the warm, friendly atmosphere of a ‘proper’ pub. There’s an open fire, numerous ales on hand pump and a top-class wine by the glass list. The menu changes daily, using seasonal and local produce where possible. Upstairs, and in the Georgian properties next door but one, are 27 individually styled bedrooms featuring both modern and period twists that remain sympathetic to the beautiful buildings in which they reside.
