“Stunning décor” (including an indoor tree in full pink blossom and green onyx flooring) can come as a “real surprise” for first-time visitors to this three-year-old establishment from Richard Caring (although, TBF, the glitzy interiors of his faux-oriental chain are plastered all over Instagram). “Staff can’t be faulted”, and “the food is okay… until the bill arrives!”. The whole Ivy group is subject to a protracted billion-pound sale to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan that had yet to be completed as we went to press.

“A true experience that can’t be beaten for people-watching”, this two-year-old branch of the glitzy national chain wins gasps of (mainly) admiration for its “amazing” if “slightly tasteless decor” (green onyx flooring, mirrored ceilings, a forest of foliage), while its menu of “good food” grabbed vicariously from a hit-list of fashionable Asian cuisines generally passed muster. Founder Richard Caring sold his controlling share in the group for a cool £1 billion in the latter half of 2024.

Above its sister Ivy and one of three Ivys in the county, Richard Caring’s showy pan-Asian beamed down in late 2022, complete with trademark green onyx flooring, mirrored ceilings, interior foliage and expensive culinary pick ’n’ mix from a huge menu of of diverse inspiration, leaning heavily on Japan (sushi, sashimi, black cod), but also taking in China (‘black pepper and szechuan [sic] glazed chicken’, aromatic half duck); and with time to spare for Afternoon Tea. No quibbles about cultural appropriation in feedback, though – all feedback rates it solidly well (certainly better than its more traditional namesakes).

Richard Caring’s swanky, spin-off Asian brand opened in Leeds in mid October 2022, complete with signature green onyx flooring, two large cherry blossom trees and the brand’s customary culinary mishmash of sushi and sashimi, plus a hodge-podge of ‘pan-Asian classics with a twist’. (The Man Behind the Curtain’s Michael O’Hare was amongst local c’lebs Instagramming its launch party).

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
