Long Chim has announced the ending of its pop-up residency at Hovarda in Soho after 10 months, while indicating that it will return soon at a 'new London home'.

Harden's says

Taking up a ground-floor residency at Hovarda in Rupert Street, Soho, Aussie chef David Thompson makes his return to London 12 years after closing Nahm in Belgravia. He’s now based in Bangkok, and Long Chim is his take on the cooking of the city’s markets and alleyways.

“A welcome addition to the Thai scene from expert chef David Thompson (buy his book, it’s a Thai classic!)” – this late 2024 debut on the fringe of Chinatown is part of a group with branches in Sydney, Perth and Dubai and marks a return to the Capital of a western chef who has built international renown for his Thai cuisine. The “glossy”, brightly decorated interior aims for associations with a Bangkok street scene while the culinary focus is “a short menu of small dishes” that are “full of earthy and spicy flavours”. Ratings overall are middling however, and even some who consider this “a good recent addition to Thai options in the middle of town” say “it’s a bit on the pricey side”. Moreover, for those drawn by David’s renown, it can feel “so disappointing after all the hype about his return” and “a very ordinary experience given the pedigree of the chef”. (Spookily, such divided opinions are eerily reminiscent of Thompson’s first venture in London – Nahm at Belgravia’s swanky Halkin, which closed a dozen years ago).

Summary

Chef David Thompson has built international renown for his Thai cuisine, although his previous London venture of over a decade ago – Nahm (long RIP), in Belgravia’s swanky Halkin Hotel – never quite hit the mark (despite achieving a Michelin star). This Chinatown newcomer joins branches in Sydney, Perth and Dubai and incorporates a big basement, with a small ground-floor mezzanine and sizable exterior courtyard for outside dining. As you’d expect, this is a more down-to-earth formula than Belgravia’s was, with a more casual, street-food-style menu.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

The Guardian

Grace Dent could barely disguise her disappointment at this comeback restaurant from David Thompson, the chef credited with bringing authentic fiery Thai cuisine to London more than 20 years ago. Some of the dishes, she admitted, were “delicious” (namely the beef skewer and the tapioca with coconut and corn dessert), but the menu is “startlingly brief” at just four starters, seven mains with steamed jasmine the only rice option and the briefest of nods towards pudding.

“’Long chim’ translates loosely as ‘come and try, and you literally could try everything here on a single visit”, she said – so the offer felt “somewhat meagre” compared with nearby modern Thai spots Kiln and Speedboat. It’s “punchily priced”, too.
