Harden's survey result
Summary
Celebrating their half century this year, three generations of the Lou family have been an “always reliable” source of “consistently tasty and well prepared Chinese food” for local Actonians since the 1970s. Lawrence, who runs it these days, pretty well grew up in the restaurant and makes sure that “service is always friendly”.
Summary
The Lou family’s stalwart fixture is approaching its half a century in Acton (it opened in 1976). What’s sustained it over all these years? – a “consistently high standard of cooking, which combines with friendly service in a well-decorated dining room that’s usually nicely buzzing”. Top Menu Tip – “I’ve yet to have better spare ribs anywhere – including China!”
Summary
“The venerable kingpin of Chinese food in this part of west London is not giving up its crown easily” – opened by the Lou family in the outer reaches of Acton in 1976, it has served “exceptionally tasty Peking-style cuisine” with “considerate service and warm atmosphere” for almost 50 years.
Summary
The Lou family’s West London fixture of almost 50 years’ standing, was created by founder Hung Sun Lou (aka Chef Lou, now in his 80s) and more latterly has operated under his son Lawrence, the current owner, who virtually grew up in the restaurant. Lost on the outskirts of Acton, it provides northern Chinese cuisine of consistently “high quality”.
For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

North China Restaurant Diner Reviews
"We have been coming to the North China for almost fifty years, whenever we come to London. Their spare ribs are a family legend, always brought up when discussing great meals, so when we went to the big smoke for a family get together we made a bee-line to Acton. The spare ribs were a disapointment - they used to be as tender as is possible and these needed a good bit of chewing. The scallops on the shell were a little overcooked so a bit rubbery. The rest of the meal was fine, but not as exceptional as before. In previous visits ove rthe years on a Friday night it would have been packed out and buzzing, but it was only 60% full and quiet. When we left we agreed that if you lived in Acton or nearby you would go occasionally when you needed a meal but it is no longer worth a journey from across the city as it used to be. As they say "never go back". "
