Harden's survey result
Summary
“A real treat for vegetarians”, this Hammersmith institution was “opened by Michael and Adrian Daniel in 1989 and has been at the top of its game for years” – “many’s the friend brought along here who hasn’t noticed there’s no meat on the menu, and that’s because the food is good, well cooked, and interesting”. (An intriguing space in the eves of a church – “the dining room is housed in what was the studio of artist Frank Brangwyn, and the name comes from the wrought-iron gate he made for the entrance”). Top Menu Tip – “lean into the mushroom dishes in autumn”… “leek and trompette tart with shortcrust pastry is simply delicious”.
Summary
“High-end vegetarian cuisine” – with “such inventive recipes” – has carved a brilliant reputation amongst veggies and carnivores alike for Michael and Adrian Daniel’s characterful stalwart, which “has been around forever” (well, since 1989). It occupies an attractively quirky space too, over a Hammersmith church near the Eventim Apollo, but – albeit a “really nice and friendly venue” – one or two reporters feel “the venue and service could do with refreshing” (and its two spin-off branches closed this year). Top Menu Tips – “dreamy aubergine dish” and “courgette flower and the red Thai curry and mushroom are both favourites”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The Gate Restaurant Diner Reviews
"I've been eating here for almost 35 years, and while that might make me sentimental about the place, I'm always pleasantly surprised that they manage to maintain not only their standard of quality food, but their ability to surprise. The room is housed in what was the studio of artist Frank Brangwyn, the name came from the wrought iron gate designed by Brangwyn that used to be at the entrance (where did that go?). Two of my children are vegetarians, and for them this place is a real treat. I'm especially fond of the leaning into mushrooms in the autumn. Many's the friend I've brought here who hasn't seemed to spot that there's no meat on the menu and that's because, the food is good, well cooked, and interesting. "
