“Holds its own amongst all the surrounding high-end restaurants” – Kevin Stone and his family’s local fixture occupies a pleasant, light-filled conservatory and in summer there’s a terrace overlooking the River Derwent. Reports suggest it’s “always a pleasure to eat there” – not everything is perfect but “the food is really good and competitive prices add to its good value”.

“A lovely restaurant by the River Derwent serving well-executed food at good prices”, run by head chef Kevin Stone, wife Jade and sister Katie Temple. Perhaps not as foodie as some nearby rivals, but “for the quality and the friendly and efficient front of house, the place takes some beating”. “In warm weather try to get a table on the terrace overlooking the water”.

Kevin Stone (the chef), wife Jade and sister Katie Temple provide “very good cooking and service” at this converted pub, whose glazed dining room, opening onto an outside terrace, makes the most of its “lovely setting” overlooking the River Derwent. Despite the heritage of the building, the menu – with a tasting option – is restaurant-style fare, not pub grub.

“A treat of a place, both in terms of tastes and in terms of being looked after” – Kevin Stone’s converted pub sits overlooking the River Derwent and is often noted for its “good value”: be it from its à la carte or tasting menu.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

Tucked away in the heart of Matlock, Stones is a cosy and eclectic restaurant with a stylish and welcoming decor and a superb modern British menu. Stones Restaurant is jointly run by Kevin Stone Head Chef, wife Jade and sister Katie Temple.

Our philosophy is to provide a fantastic dining experience in a relaxed setting. The dining room, which is popular with couples, locals and visitors to the area offers a perfect place for romantic, family or business meals. We also have a beautiful riverside terrace, where you can relax, dine and unwind with a glass of wine from our extensive wine list.

We offer a set menu at lunch and dinner alongside a Tasting Menu. We also offer a bespoke vegetarian offering. Our menus change regularly to reflect the very best in seasonal and local produce.

You can join us at Stones for lunch 12-1.30 Wednesday to Saturday and for dinner 6.30-8.30 Tuesday to Saturday. Friday and Saturdays are particularly busy, we would advise booking ahead if possible.
