James & Kate Mackenzie have kept up the standards at this glorious 15th-century coaching inn (one diner for whom it is a “home from home”, has been coming “twelve years on the trot”). Whether you indulge in the sandwiches, “fab” mains built on “exceptional local produce”, or “a perfect pork Sunday lunch”, it’s “probably the cheapest Michelin star dining” to be had these days – and certainly in these parts, being East Yorkshire’s only starred restaurant, which it has held for aeons now.

“Excellent food, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a lovely environment” make a visit to this former coaching inn in East Yorkshire a real treat. Chef James & FOH Kate Mackenzie have transformed it over two decades into a regional culinary powerhouse, wooing diners with the “inspiring combinations” on their à la carte menu (which, given that this is a pub, extends to sandwiches). “Have a lovely unrushed lunch, followed by a walk in their wonderful garden”. Top Menu Tip – “A fabulous roast pork loin followed by an unbelievable ginger burnt cream with poached garden rhubarb and amazing East Yorkshire sugar cakes”.

“Always-excellent food in beautiful, quaint surroundings” has made James & Kate Mackenzie’s former coaching inn a real East Yorkshire destination for almost 20 years – “and everyone is so friendly”. There’s “no tasting menu, but with such good options amongst the selection of dishes, that makes a refreshing change”. Top Tip – with seven boutique bedrooms, it’s “a great place to stay because the breakfast is amazing: five or so choices of fish for breakfast, most places you’d be lucky to get one!”.

James and Kate Mackenzie imbue this “warm and professional” gastropub with personality and – notwithstanding an out-of-the-way location in East Yorkshire – it continues to be one of the most highly commented-on in the country. Despite its plaudits from Michelin, it has remained “realistically priced” and the menu steers a clever line between options that are ambitious enough to lift them well above the ordinary, but grounded enough not to seem fancy-schmancy: “superb dishes, all with a local accent”. In summer, “a lovely evening is boosted by the beautiful garden and terrace for drinks”. Fans say it’s “well worth the 100 mile round trip!” although there are also “delightful rooms in the gardens” where you can stay.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"It’s nice for a change not to have to follow some chef’s “artistic and culinary journey” via the medium of a 15 course tasting menu and just get to choose what you want to eat …pub grub prepared to perfection! Between the Main, Specials and Vegetarian Menus the range of dishes on offer are impressive. For my starter I opted for the Potted Pork for the main I plumped for the Roast Guinea Fowl ( served with pickled Shimeji mushrooms, Leg Meat parcel and “quenelles” of broccoli and wild garlic). I am sure that you could find better single desserts ( called “Afters” here) but for sheer indulgence I recommend that you go for “Five Reasons to Love Chocolate” - literally 5 generous and beautifully presented chocolate themed puddings (Brownie, Mousse, Brûlée, Sorbet and Chocolate Orange Cone)… wow!"

"Unusually, the halibut was overcooked. This was instantly replaced which retrieved things but at £37 should not have happened. Despite being full, it did not feel crowded, good room between tables."
