Harden's survey result
Summary
“A quaint and slightly old-fashioned ambience” adds to the charms of a visit to chef-patron Giorgio Alessio’s stalwart venture – est. 1997, and dubbed the ‘English temple of Italian cuisine’ by Italian daily paper La Stampa. “The freshest fish, beautifully cooked” (“the velvet crab pasta is exceptional”) features strongly on the menu, which skips the usual suspects like pizza for true cucina inspired by Giorgio’s native Piedmont – the in-house speciality being Montcalvo truffles, which work their way into super-charged comfort food like pasta, risotto and veal escalopes.
Summary
This Italian institution on the Yorkshire coast is “a reliable treat” (according to a regular who has “dined here since 1975”!) with chef-patron Giorgio Alessio at the helm since 1997, combining fresh local seafood personally selected every morning at Scarborough harbour with the cuisine off his native Piedmont – in particular the white truffles from Montcalvo that are his passion.
Summary
“We go regularly and are always sated and often delighted”, say fans of the authentic Italian cooking at this stalwart on the Yorkshire coast, owned since 1997 by chef-patron Giorgio Alessio – a champion of the cuisine of his native Piedmont and the white truffles that are its crown jewels. He first talked of retiring five years ago, so don’t postpone your visit too long.
Summary
“A hidden gem with authentic Italian home cooking”, this Yorkshire stalwart provides much better cooking than one might expect of this seaside town, thanks to its careful sourcing and preparation by chef-patron Giorgio Alessio (owner since 1997) who travels regularly to Italy to buy white truffles and other ingredients. “Since 1975 we have eaten here 2-3 times a year: it has never disappointed!”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Lanterna Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Scarborough is not the place it once was, with many streets now a bit shaby. Shining still bright though, is this excellent "Local Italian". Really good - and very good value - wine list ensures a cosy evening. If only every neighbouhood had a "Local Italian" this good."
