2. Restaurant Hywel Jones by Lucknam Park
British, Modern restaurant in Colerne
Since 2006, chef Hywel Jones has been at the helm of the kitchen of this traditional, period dining room which provides a very classical country-house retreat in a rural Palladian mansion: go somewhere else if you want stripped floors and open kitchen, as here you will get swagged curtains, tablecloths, silverware and aperitifs in the lounge. Limited feedback this year, but remaining positive on its high-quality, classically rooted cuisine: there is a tasting menu, but the à la carte offers three courses for £115 per person.
3. The Dining Room, Whatley Manor
British, Modern restaurant in Easton Grey
Under chef Ricki Weston, this Cotswolds country-house hotel has maintained its reputation as a significant foodie destination, with the main event in the dining room being a seven-course tasting menu at £175 per person, although there is also an à la carte menu for £120 per person. But while all feedback rates the experience as “exceptional all-round”, it was more limited this year and consequently we’ve continued to rate it quite conservatively.
4. Dan's at The Crown
British, Modern restaurant in Marlborough
6-7 The Parade - SN8
“If ‘Cheers’ was a restaurant, this would be what it felt like” – a local indie (now with a marquee) that has built up a “good reputation locally”, and where Aussie owner “Dan (Bond), Charlotte and their team produce great grub” by most (if not all) accounts; however, “what really matters is the embracing atmosphere, defining the phrase ‘neighbourhood restaurant’”.
5. Red Lion at East Chisenbury
British, Modern restaurant in East Chisenbury
“This lovely neighbourhood star” – an 18th-century thatched pub-restaurant in the Vale of Pewsey, north of Stonehenge – “goes from strength to strength”: “Guy & Britt Manning don’t just turn out great food, they run a happy place that is as enjoyable for an ordinary lunch as for a special occasion” (and it accounted for numerous diners’ best meal of the year in the current poll). “We would be back more often if it wasn‘t so far away, but at least you can stay the night and enjoy their wonderful breakfasts, too”. Top Menu Tip – “their signature crab tart is as good as anything you’ll eat from The Ritz to Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons”.
6. The Black Swan Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Devizes
25 - 26 The Market Place - SN10
“Great pub food at the funky end of gastro” and “amazing Sunday roasts” are crowd-pleasers at this 18th-century coaching inn in the centre of town, which also ticks the boxes for “friendly staff and good service”.
7. The Rectory
British, Modern restaurant in Malmesbury
Crudwell - SN16
“You feel exceptional” at this “comfortable”, “romantic” and smartly modernised Georgian-era hotel with 18 rooms, where the dining room has a striking glazed addition and whose kitchen has now combined the talents of Jake Simpson (ex-Bocca di Lupo) and James Erasmus (ex-Ledbury & Harwood Arms). Regular supper clubs supplement the à la carte menu that’s more luxe brasserie than it is ‘fayne dining’ and is sensibly priced, too. (Its sibling pub, the Potting Shed, is just across the road.)
